I study human reasoning and decision making. The tasks I study range from categorization, to consumer choice, to gambling, to Bayesian reasoning, to eyewitness lineups. A common thread across all of these areas is a determination of which of the myriad possible sources of information is being attended and how those sources are combined when making a judgment or choosing between options. My work relies on empirical techniques such as behavioral experiments and eye tracking, statistical analysis, and computational modeling. In this context, a computational model is a psychological theory that has been described in mathematical terms. The qualitative and quantitative predictions of the model allow for precise comparison to empirical data.
