When people make choices that are conditional on the choices of those around them, explanations of social activity must take into account the structure of social ties linking those people together. Described more than a century ago as “Galton’s problem,” interdependence is a fundamental fact of social behavior whether one is studying organizational decision- making or mass political behavior, yet remains persistently difficult to integrate into most empirical research. My research tackles the theoretical and methodological challenges of studying social and political decision-making embedded within social contexts.
